Technologies:

Rapidfire Plus: The first choice for a wide range of riders, from XC racers to freeriders and downhillers. Rapidfire Plus is designed for fast shifting. The rider can downshift up to three gears in a single shift. All Rapidfire Plus shifters, from Shimano Deore to XTR, feature 2-Way Release. This means the shift cable can be released by pulling with the index finger or pushing with the thumb.

Multi-Release: With previous shifting systems, gear changes in one direction were always faster than in the other. Choosing between Top-Normal and Low-Normal always meant sacrificing shifting speed in one direction for the other. With Multi-Release, two gears can now be shifted with a single lever action. The result: the fastest possible gear change in both directions, regardless of the type of derailleur used.

2-Way Release: The release lever of a Rapidfire Plus shifter is usually called a trigger because it is pulled towards the grip like the trigger of a pistol. The release lever of the Rapidfire Plus shifters from Shimano Alivio to XTR can be operated in the same way. However, it can also be used for shifting with the thumb.

Instant Release: The Instant Release shifting mechanism replaces the two-stage click-and-release process. The cable is released immediately upon lever actuation, achieving the fastest possible gear change. Regardless of whether shifting up with a top-normal derailleur or down with a low-normal derailleur, a faster shift is always a better shift.
